Box Score

Los Angeles - Led by two goals from junior Tracey Winzen, the third-seeded UCLA women's soccer team registered a 3-0 victory over Cal State Fullerton in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships at UCLA's Drake Stadium Friday. With the win, UCLA improves to 18-2-0 overall, while Fullerton ends its season at 13-7-0. The Bruins advance to Sunday's second round and will take on Pepperdine, a 1-0 winner over USC in Friday's first match of the day. Sunday's second round will begin at 1:00 p.m.

Following a scoreless first half, UCLA took a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the second half when Bruin forward Staci Duncan headed a high-bouncing ball over Fullerton goalkeeper Laura Janke. Mary-Frances Monroe and Winzen were credited with the assist.

UCLA's next two goals came on free kicks just outside the penalty box. In the 71st minute of play, Monroe was taken down just outside the Fullerton box, setting up a direct free kick for Winzen, who put it in from about 22 yards out. In the 82nd minute of the match, Duncan was taken down in the same area and Winzen scored again for her second goal of the match.

"I think they wore us down a bit," said Fullerton head coach Ali Khosroshahin. "We were tired and you could see it. The first goal UCLA scored, there was a little miscommunication in the back. The two free kicks were great shots."

Bruin goalkeeper CiCi Peterson made a game-high eight saves. UCLA outshot the Titans, 16-10.

"That was a very physical team we just played," UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis said. "The scouting report was true on them. They hit and they hit hard. It's sometimes hard to play your style when you play a team like that."

On Sunday, UCLA will be without the services of senior captain Krista Boling who will be serving a one-game suspension for receiving a red card in Friday's match.
