Los Angeles - Head UCLA women's tennis coach Stella Sampras announced the hiring of Rance Brown for the position of assistant coach Thursday. Brown replaces Jon Reeves, who after two years on staff, has elected to return to coaching junior tennis in Peachtree, Ga.
Brown arrives at UCLA after heading up one of the most successful junior tennis programs in the country. For the past 17 years, he has served as director of tennis at the Newport Beach Marriot Hotel and Tennis Club in Orange County. During that time, he has worked with some of the top junior boys and girls in California. In addition, he has also continued to assist former UCLA All-American's Keri Phebus and Annica Cooper on the professional tour.
Brown is making his second stint as assistant coach at UCLA, after serving the same capacity from 1996-2000. In 2000, he was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Assistant Coach of the Year.
"We're really excited to have Rance back in the program," said Sampras. "He has a tremendous amount of experience and has been working with some of the top juniors in the country. He will help continue UCLA's tradition as one of the top programs in America."
Brown received his Associate of Arts degree from Golden West Junior College, where he played on the tennis team for two years. He helped the squad earn two conference team titles, registering one conference doubles title in the process. He played the 1981 season at Long Beach State and competed professionally at Challenger Level Tournaments before devoting his time to coaching.
