Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - No. 13 UCLA was unable to hold off third-ranked Stanford on Saturday night in Maples Pavilion, falling to the Cardinal 30-22, 31-29, 30-26. Nana Meriwether led the Bruins in the match with nine kills and nine blocks (three solo, six assists) for 15 points. The match will be televised on a tape-delayed basis on Sunday at 3 pm PT on CSTV as part of their "NCAA Volleyball: AVCA Match of the Week" series.

Stanford sprinted out to an 11-3 lead in the opening game of the match, and an injury-decimated UCLA squad was not able to recover. The Bruins were able to climb within five points at 20-15, but the mini-rally was not enough. In game two, the Cardinal once again had an early lead, but UCLA put together an impressive rally late in the game, holding off game point five times to tie the game at 29-all before a kill from Stanford's Foluke Akinradewo paired with a Bruin attack error sealed the 31-29 game two win for Stanford.

In game three, UCLA came out of the break with the momentum from their late rally in game two, and went out to an early lead. Stanford was then able to close the gap and take the lead 6-5. UCLA closed to within two points at 11-9, and again cutting the lead to three points at 18-15 but the Cardinal was too strong, closing out the 30-26 third game win.

Junior middle blocker Nana Meriwether led the Bruins with 15 points in the match on nine kills and nine blocks, three solo and six assists while hitting .667 in the contest. Freshman Kelsey Hall led UCLA with 10 kills in the match while freshman libero Jordan Smith had a team-high 11 digs.

The Bruins return to action on Friday for their home opener against cross-town rival USC. The match will be the opening contest for the 2005-06 Lexus Gauntlet, which UCLA captured last season by the largest margin in Gauntlet history. The match is scheduled for a 7 pm PT start in Pauley Pavilion.
