Baseball Falls in Stanford, 9-8 in the 10th Inning

Final Stats

A walk-off home run from Donny Lucy in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Stanford (38-15) a 9-8 win over the Bruins (26-30) in front of 3,338 fans at Sunken Diamond on Sunday afternoon.

Lucy hit his second home run of the season to lead-off the 10th inning and end the contest.

As has been a trend with the Bruins this year, they got on the board in the top of the first inning. After Wes Whisler reached base on a fielder's choice, Billy Susdorf would clear the bases with a home run over the left field fence. The home run was his ninth of the season. After an inning, UCLA led 2-0.

Stanford took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second frame when the rally began with back-to-back homers from Chris Carter and Danny Putnam. After an out, Brian Hall would double to left-field and later scored on a sacrifice fly.

Matt Thayer's one-out double started the rally in the fourth inning. Thayer went to third on a ground out and would score on a wild pitch from Cardinal starter Tim Cunningham. After three and a half innings, the teams were tied at 3-3.

A two-run home run from Carlos Quentin in the bottom of the fifth inning would give the Cardinal the lead once again. After the round-tripper, Bryan Beck came in to relieve starter Doug Silva and retired the next three Stanford batters.

Whisler led off the sixth inning with his eighth home run of the season to bring UCLA within one run. The homer brought in Cardinal reliever Kodiak Quick, who struck-out the next two Bruin batters. However, back-to-back walks to Matt Thayer and pinch-hitter Chris Jensen extended the inning. Averill would drive in Thayer with a RBI-single up the middle. Ryan McCarthy would put the Bruins ahead with a RBI-single through the right side. After five and a half innings, UCLA led, 6-4.

The Cardinal would threaten to take back the lead in the bottom of the frame when back-to-back singles led off the inning. A sacrifice bunt would advance the runners before UCLA intentionally walked Sam Fuld. However, Beck forced Johnny Ash to hit into an inning ending double play.

Another Whisler homer, this time with Warren Trott at first after being hit by a pitch, would give UCLA a 8-5 lead in the top of the seventh. The home run marked the first multiple home run game for Whisler this season.

Stanford posted two runs in the bottom of the inning with a two-run shot from Putnam, who had homered back in the second inning.

The Cardinal evened the score in the bottom of the eighth inning when Sam Fuld tripled to center field to put a runner in scoring position. Pinch hitter Ryan Garko would drive him in with a sacrifice fly. After eight innings, the teams were tied at 8-8.

The Bruins will wrap-up their Pac-10 season next weekend with a three-game series at Washington State. First pitch is set for 6:00 pm on Friday night.
