Karl Dorrell Declines One-Year Contract Extension

Feb. 3, 2004

UCLA head football coach Karl Dorrell has declined to exercise an option in his contract that would have added an additional year to his existing agreement, it was announced today.

Dorrell's contract states that the University and Dorrell "may mutually agree in writing to extend the term . . . for one additional year" between January 1 and January 31 each year the contract remains in effect.

Bruin athletic director Dan Guerrero made the offer late last week.

Dorrell signed a six-year contract prior to the 2003 season. By declining the additional year, he now has a five-year contract that runs through the 2008 season.

"I appreciate Dan's support and the offer to extend my contract by a year," said Dorrell. "In my mind, we did not accomplish enough of our goals this past season for me to accept the offer of the additional year, so I have respectively declined it. It was a frustrating season for our team, our coaches and our fans. I understand the fans' frustration and hope they will continue to support the young men in this program.

"UCLA is an outstanding university and my goal is to make us the No. 1 program in the Pac-10. I am confident in my ability, and the ability of our coaching staff, to accomplish that goal. It will take a lot of hard work from all the coaches and players, but we are excited about the challenge and won't be satisfied until the goal is accomplished."

"Karl Dorrell has a great vision for the UCLA football program and we remain confident in his ability to get the program to where he feels it should be," said Guerrero. "While there was disappointment with the way last season concluded, we still remain very supportive of Karl and feel he is the man to lead us back to the top of the Pac-10.

"When Karl was hired in December of 2002, we said he was going to build a new program, beginning with its foundation. He has laid that foundation with discipline and hard work and is making changes he feels are necessary to help facilitate the program's improvement. We have great faith in Karl and we encourage the members of the UCLA family to be patient as the building process continues."
