Softball Wraps Up Regular Season at Easton Stadium

May 11, 2004

This Week:
FRIDAY (5/14): 1 pm vs. #1/1 Arizona ? Easton Stadium
SATURDAY (5/15): 1 pm Doubleheader vs. Arizona State ??Easton Stadium
SUNDAY (5/9): 5:30 pm PT ? NCAA Selection Show ? ESPNews

The Bruins play the final three games of their regular season schedule this weekend at Easton Stadium, opening the set against No. 1 Arizona, a team that has already clinched the 2004 Pac-10 Championship and the corresponding automatic bid to this year's NCAA Championship. The Wildcats will also host an NCAA Regional. UCLA lost both of its earlier meetings with Arizona, as the Wildcats came from behind to win in the bottom of the seventh inning of both games in early April. UCLA has a 52-47 all-time record against Arizona.

UCLA was scheduled to open Pac-10 play with a Friday evening game in Tempe, AZ, on April 2 of this year, but that game was rained out. ASU took two games from Oregon last weekend, guaranteeing that the Sun Devils will finish over .500 on the season and keeping them eligible for NCAA selection. ASU is currently eighth in the Pac-10 standings, half a game behind Oregon State for seventh place. UCLA holds a 46-17 all-time record against the Sun Devils. Saturday's doubleheader will be the first meetings between these two teams in 2004.

UCLA Selected to Host an NCAA Regional
The UCLA softball team has been selected to host an NCAA Regional at Easton Stadium May 20-23, it was announced on Tuesday. Teams participating at the eight-team site will be announced on May 16 between 5-6 pm Pacific Time on ESPNEWS. Additionally, three games from the Los Angeles Regional will be televised by ESPN with Beth Mowins and Tammy Blackburn calling the action. Game times have not yet been announced. The field for the 2004 NCAA Softball Championship will be announced on May 16 between 5-6 pm on ESPNEWS.

Bruins Climb to Fourth in Pac-10 Standings
UCLA opened last week's play with a 1-0 loss to Washington that featured a dominant one-hit, 10-strikeout performance by senior Keira Goerl, but UCLA's homerless streak extended to a season-long three games and the Bruins left eight runners on base against the Huskies in the loss.

The Bruins then traveled north for a televised contest against California that featured a 2-for-3 day from Caitlin Benyi, including a double and a home run. Unfortunately, Benyi's solo shot was not enough, as Cal posted a 2-1 win over UCLA, the Golden Bears first regular season win over the Bruins since the 1998 season.

UCLA regrouped for the weekend set at Stanford, pounding out 19 hits, scoring 13 runs and accumulating five home runs combined in a 6-2 win on Saturday and a 7-1 triumph on Sunday afternoon. Saturday's win featured a grand slam home run by Claire Sua in the top of the seventh inning to break a 2-2 tie, while Sunday's win saw Caitlin Benyi complete an impressive offensive week, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and a double with four RBIs and two runs scored on the day. That win also saw Keira Goerl record her 120th career victory, a number that ties her for fourth on the NCAA's all-time list for Division I victories.
