UCLA Women's Soccer Names Mertz Assistant Coach

July 12, 2000

Los Angeles -- Former N.C. State goalkeeper and University of Virginia assistant coach Katherine Mertz has been hired as an assistant coach for the UCLA women's soccer team.

Mertz, who was an assistant at Virginia in 1999, will focus primarily on the development of UCLA's goalkeepers. She replaces David Vanole, who has accepted the job of head goalkeeper coach with the U.S. Women's National Team. He will continue to serve as the goalkeeper coach for the UCLA men's soccer program.

" I'm extremely excited about Katherine's addition to our staff," said head coach Jillian Ellis. "I think her expertise and energy is sure to enhance the overall success of our program"

A 1998 graduate of N. C. State University, Mertz was a starter from 1994-1997 and helped the Wolfpack advance to the NCAA tournament in each of her first three seasons. She set the ACC career record in saves (436) and ranks second all-time in conference history with 24 shutouts.

Following her graduation from N.C. State, Mertz continued her soccer career as the goalkeeper for the Raleigh Wings of the Elite W-League, which won the USISL Championship in 1998.

Mertz holds a USSF National D License.
