Box Score

BERKELEY, Calif. -- The UCLA women's volleyball team (1-6, 1-0 in Pac-10) registered its first victory of the season with a 3-1 (15-9, 8-15, 15-6, 15-7) win over the University of California (3-6, 0-1 in Pac-10) Friday night at the Recreational Sports Facility Fieldhouse on the Cal campus. The win gives the Bruins an all-time record of 35-0 against the Bears.

Cal had appeared to have the momentum to start the match, jumping out to a quick 3-0 lead in game one behind a loud crowd of 618 and two service aces by junior outside hitter Brook Coulter. UCLA was able to recover, tying the match at 6-6 and then going on a 7-0 run and cruising to the 15-9 victory.

UCLA took an early lead in game two, but Cal came back to tie the match at 6-6. Cal then went on a 8-0 run and ended up winning the game 15-8. The Bruins, however, took games three and four easily, with the Bears never getting any closer than two points.

UCLA was led by Kristee Porter, who had a match-leading 24 kills with only six errors in 45 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage. Porter also led the Bruins with 13 digs and Ashley Bowles chipped in with 16 kills and had three service aces. Sophomore Elisabeth Bachman added 12 kills with only two errors in 31 attacks and also managed eight blocks. Cal's leading hitter was sophomore outside hitter Jameka Stevens, who had 18 kills and Coulter finished the match with 20 digs and had three service aces. The Bears were hurt by the fact starting middle blocker, Kellie Alva, was out with a torn abdominal muscle.

UCLA will next play at No. 9 Stanford, Sept. 20 at 4:00 in Maples Pavilion. Cal will host No. 5 ranked USC Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. at the RSF Fieldhouse.
