MALIBU, Calif. - UCLA's Chris Sands and Lassi Ketola advanced to the third round singles of the ITA Region VIII-South Championships Thursday.
Sands, who automatically qualified for the main draw competition, defeated UCSB's Marcin Kosakowski 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the third round. Earlier in the day, Sands defeated Arizona State's Pim Van Mele 6-3, 7-5 in first round action.
Ketola, a freshman from Finland, cruised past Pepperdine's Ryan Edlefsen 6-0, 6-0 in the second round. Ketola also automatically qualified for the main draw and earlier defeated Cal Poly's John Cappello 6-3, 6-1 in the first round.
Freshman Alan Bohane, who earlier won two qualifying matches Wednesday to advance to the main draw, defeated Pepperdine's Steve Racioppi in straight sets but fell 6-1, 6-2 to Alex Osterrieth of Arizona State in the second round.
Freshmen Zac Knysh and Jared Freedman fell in the third and second rounds of the qualifying singles, respectively.
In doubles action, the No. 6 seed duo of Lassi Ketola and Chris Sands advanced to the second round of the main draw, defeating the Arizona doubles team of Alex Brown and Tommy Lloyd 8-3.
UCLA's Alan Bohane and Zac Knysh fell to UC Irvine's Brett Lucas and David Matthew in the first round main draw after havigd defeated Capello and Levy of Cal Poly 8-2 in the second round of the qualifying doubles.
The ITA Region VIII-South Men's Tennis Championships is a four-day tournament which began on Thursday, Nov. 4 and concludes on Sunday, Nov. 7. The tournament, which hosts many of the region's top collegiate men's tennis players, includes a 64-player singles and 32-team doubles draw and features players from 12 schools-- Arizona, Arizona State, Cal Poly, Loyola Marymount, Nevada, Pacific, Pepperdine, San Diego, UC Irvine, UCLA, UC Santa Barbara and USC.
