Los Angeles - Brynn Murphy had 21 kills and Colby Lyman added 16 digs as the 11th-ranked Bruin women's volleyball team upset fifth-ranked Cal on Friday night in Berkeley in five games, 30-22, 14-30, 24-30, 30-22, 15-12.
The Bruins improve to 14-4, 6-3 Pac-10, while Cal falls to 16-1, 7-1 Pac-10. UCLA also improves to 43-0 all-time against the Golden Bears.
UCLA's defense was the story of game one, forcing 12 Cal errors as the Golden Bears hit .000 for the opening game. The Bruins used 14 kills of their own to win game one, 30-22. Cal bounced back in game two, notching 11 kills and just one error while this time UCLA had 13 hitting errors to give Cal a 30-14 win in game two and knotting the match at 1-1.
After intermission, Cal remained hot, posting 24 kills and just five errors in game three, holding off the Bruins for a 30-24 decision and a 2-1 lead in the match. UCLA would rally in game four, taking the momentum away from the home team en route to 22 kills in game four, taking a 30-22 victory and setting the stage for yet another five-game match this season for the Bruins.
Once again, the UCLA defense stepped it up, forcing six Cal errors while the Bruins made just three hitting errors in the decisive game as UCLA took game five, 15-12, and in the process gave Cal its first loss of the season.
Murphy was the lone Bruin in double figure kills with 21, just one shy of her career high. Four Bruins posted double-figure digs, led by Lyman's 16. Heather Cullen added 15 digs while Chrissie Zartman (14) and Krystal McFarland (12) also led the charge. Cira Wright led UCLA at the net with four block assists. Mia Jerkov paced Cal with 24 kills and 17 digs.
The Bruins continue their road swing next weekend, heading to Oregon (Oct. 23) and Oregon State (Oct. 24).
