LOS ANGELES -- Jason Kapono, last season's CBS SportsLine National Freshman of the Year, is one of the Preseason Top 50 candidates for the 2000-2001 Wooden Award All-America team. The list was released by the Wooden Award Committee on Aug. 18.
Kapono is actually a Top 25 selection within the Top 50 list. In late December, the Award Committee will release a Midseason Top 30. On March 27, 2001, the 10-player Wooden Award All-America team will be announced. One member of that squad will be selected on April 6, 2001 as the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year." The 2001 team marks the silver anniversary (25 years) of the Wooden Award.
Kapono last season as a true freshman was one of two Bruins to start every game (33, Earl Watson was the other) and he led the Bruins in scoring (18.6). He set a single-season school record for three-point field goals (82). He also earned first-team All-Pac-10 and was the Pac-10 co-Freshman of the Year.
UCLA has had two Wooden Award winners. Marques Johnson was the first recipient of the honor in 1977 and Ed O'Bannon in 1995.
