Women's Volleyball Presents Team Awards

Feb. 1, 2005

The UCLA Women's Volleyball team held its annual team awards banquet on Sunday, January 23. The team's senior class of Heather Cullen, Krystal McFarland, Brynn Murphy, Brittany Ringel and Chrissie Zartman was honored, and team awards for the 2004 season were presented.

Sophomore Becky Green was named the team's Best Server for a second consecutive year after leading the team in aces with 32. Sophmore Tammy Jackson was named the team's Most Improved player. Jackson was able to step up and fill in as the team's starting setter for three matches in October when the Bruins regular starter was injured and unable to play at full strength.

Senior All-American Krystal McFarland was named the team's Best Setter, averaging 12.39 assists per game this season. Her 3,671 career assists rank fourth in UCLA history

Another senior, Brynn Murphy earned Best Hitter honors, having led the Bruins in kills per game with a 3.19 average and recording her 1,000th career kill during the season. Murphy completed her career with 1,242 assists to rank 17th in UCLA women's volleyball history.

Nana Meriweither earned two awards at the banquet, Best Blocker in honor of her team-leading 1.63 blocks per-game average. She was the only player on the team with more than one block per game during the 2004 season. She also earned Best Newcomer honors, leading the team in hitting percentage and blocks while recording 305 kills on the season.

Finally, senior All-American libero Chrissie Zartman earned four team awards: Best Conditioned, Best Passer, Best Digger and Team MVP. Zartman set Pac-10 and UCLA records with 2,064 career digs and 4.46 digs per-game. Her career digs total ranks fourth in NCAA Division I history, while her per-game average is fifth in NCAA history. During her career, she became the most honored purely defensive player in Pac-10 history, becoming the first libero to earn first-team All-Pac-10 honors, the first Pac-10 libero to be named an All-American (second-team honoree in 2004), and the first libero in Pac-10 history to earn Player of the Week honors.

UCLA finished its 2004 season with a record of 21-11 (11-7 Pac-10) and advanced to its fifth NCAA Regional Final in a six-year span.
