Ojai, Calif. - Bruin freshman Ashley Joelson won her quarterfinal singles match to advance to the semifinals in the Invitational draw Friday at the Pac-10 Championships at the Ojai Valley Athletic Club. The Bruins also had two doubles teams move on to Saturday's semifinals.
Joelson, the No. 2 seed, downed Cal's Bojana Bobusic, 6-4, 6-3 Friday. She will next face Claire Ilcinkas, also from Cal, in the semifinals on Saturday. Joelson is the Bruins' lone singles player still alive in any draw.
Three other Bruins lost quarterfinal singles matches Friday. Laura Gordon fell to top-seeded Alice Barnes of Stanford, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the main draw. In the Invitational draw, Elizabeth Lumpkin lost to Stanford's Jessica Nguyen, 6-1, 6-1, and Anna-Viktoria Lind was downed by Cal's Marian Ravelojaona, 7-5, 6-4.
In main-draw doubles action, Lumpkin and Alex McGoodwin won their first-round match 9-8(4) over Oregon's Dominika Dieskova/Ana Cecilia Olivos. They ended up falling in the second round to top-seeded Barnes/Anne Yelsey of Stanford, 8-6. Gordon and Riza Zalameda won a pair of matches to advance to the semifinals, downing Washington's Victoria Brymer/Dinka Hadzic, 8-4, and USC's Luana Magnani/Lindsey Nelson, 8-3.
In Pac-10 Invitational doubles, Joelson and Tracy Lin downed Stanford's Whitney Deason/Joanna Kao, 8-1.
Women's play moves from the Ojai Valley Athletic Club to Libbey Park on Saturday and Sunday.
