Women's Soccer Gets No. 3 Seed in NCAA Tournament

Nov. 12, 2001

Los Angeles - The UCLA women's soccer team (17-2-0, 8-1-0 Pac-10) received a No. 3 seed in the 64-team NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament and will host three other teams for first and second round matches this week at Drake Stadium.

On Friday, Nov. 16, Pepperdine and USC will meet in the first match of the day beginning at 11:00 a.m. The Waves own an 11-4-3 overall record out of the West Coast Conference. USC is 10-6-2 overall and registered a fourth-place finish in the Pac-10 Conference.

In Friday's second match, UCLA will host Cal State Fullerton at 2:00 p.m. The Titans finished the regular season with a 13-6-0 overall record and won the Big West Conference championship. The Bruins own an 8-0 all-time advantage over the Titans, winning 4-1 in their last meeting in 1999.

If USC and UCLA both win first-round matches on Friday, they will meet in the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight season, as the Bruins took a 3-0 decision over the Women of Troy in last year's tournament. In addition, UCLA registered a 2-1 home win over USC in their only meeting this season back on Oct. 21. Sunday's second-round match is at 1:00 p.m.

"Looking across the board I think it's a very balanced draw," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. I think the tournament committee did a good job of giving the teams that deserved to host and opportunity to play at home. We're as healthy as we've been all season and I feel good about our chances."

This past Sunday, UCLA defeated Stanford, 1-0 in the Bay Area to secure the 2001 Pac-10 Championship. It was UCLA's first conference championship since 1998.
