The top-ranked UCLA men's golf team will participate in The Prestige, a collegiate event featuring some of the nation's best academic and athletic institutions. The fourth annual tournament will be hosted by UC Davis and Stanford and will be played at the La Quinta Resort's Mountain Course in La Quinta, CA.
Participating schools include Northwestern, defending champion Texas Christian and Yale.
"It's an honor to be invited to this event because of the criteria involved in the field's selection," said Head Coach O.D. Vincent. "We want to end our official season the way we began it - with a victory."
The Bruins won their first two events of the season, the Inverness Invitational and the Fall Preview and rose to the top spot in the GolfWorld coaches poll on Oct. 10. They have been ranked among the nation's top five teams all season.
Travelling to The Prestige will be the nucleus of the team that won two tournaments and finished no worse than third in two other events. Seniors Steve Conway, John Merrick and Roy Moon will join junior John Poucher and freshman Chris Heintz. Another freshman Joakim Renstrom will compete as an individual.
Merrick, Poucher and Conway have each won an individual title this season. Merrick won at Inverness, Poucher won at the Fall Preview and Conway won the MacKenzie Invitational two weeks ago. All three are ranked among the nation's top 50 collegiate players.
Merrick and Conway are tied for the team lead in scoring average at 72.1, followed by Poucher at 72.4.
In addition, Heintz recorded the best finish of his collegiate career by tying for second place Oct. 28 at the SCU Invitational. Renstrom tied for 11th place after playing the final 36 holes in two-under par.
Following The Prestige, the Bruins will participate in the Collegiate Match Play Championships at Barefoot Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC, Nov. 7-9.
