Pac-10 Champion Bruins Begin Title Defense This Week
The No. 12-ranked and reigning Pac-10 Champion UCLA women's soccer team will begin its title defense this week when the Bruins open conference play against the Bay Area schools. On Friday, UCLA will host No. 5 Cal (7-2-1) at Drake Stadium beginning at 7:00 p.m. The Bruins lead the all-time series 5-3, having won the last two meetings, including a 2-0 decision in Berkeley last year. On Sunday, UCLA will host No. 2 Stanford (9-1-0) at Drake Stadium beginning at 2:00 p.m. The Bruins are 4-3-1 all-time against the Cardinal and have posted shutouts over the Cardinal in the last two meetings. UCLA defeated Stanford, 5-0 in 2000 and 1-0 in 2001. Sunday's match is also a doubleheader with the UCLA men's team, which takes on Fresno State at Noon.

Stanford Match to be Broadcast by Fox Sports Net, UCLA Radio Network
Sunday's match against Stanford will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis by Fox Sports Net. Fans in Southern California can see that match on Oct. 17 at Noon on Fox Sports West. The UCLA Bruins Radio Network will also be airing that match live via UCLA's official athletic website. Play-by-play commentator Tony Luftman will be joined by color analyst Michael Sondheimer. The live broadcast can be accessed by clicking into the 'Live Game Audio' box on the right side of UCLA's homepage: Sunday will mark the final regular-season women's soccer broadcast by the UCLA Bruins Radio Network, however the Network is scheduled to air all of UCLA's home matches during the NCAA Tournament, should the Bruins be selected to host.

Bruins Round Out Non-Conference Schedule With Win Over LMU
UCLA needed to come from behind to defeat Loyola Marymount, 3-2 on Oct. 6 at LMU's Sullivan Field. After surrendering the first goal of the match, UCLA received goals from forward Kim Devine and midfielder Sarah-Gayle Swanson. The Lions would add another goal, however Bruin midfielder Allie True broke a 2-2 tie on an unassisted goal in the 84th minute of play to give UCLA the 3-2 victory. The Bruins, which improved to 7-0 all-time against LMU, round out the 2002 non-conference season with an 8-2-0 record.

Not So Golden Goals
Both of UCLA's losses this year have come on golden goals in overtime. On Sept. 6 at the UCLA Women's Cup, Penn State's Christie Welsh broke a scoreless tie in double-overtime to give the No. 12 Nittany Lions a 1-0 victory. Most recently on Oct. 4, Santa Clara's Kristi Candau scored in the 92nd minute to give the No. 11 Broncos a slim, 2-1 decision. The Bruins one bright spot in overtime this season came against No. 5 Virginia back on Sept. 6, when forward Kim Devine's goal in the 98th minute helped defeat the Cavaliers, 4-3.

Bruins No. 12 in NSCAA/adidas, No. 5 in Soccer America Polls
After being ranked No. 3 in both major polls last week, UCLA fell nine spots to No. 12 in the latest poll released on Monday by the NSCAA. It marks the first time all year that the Bruins are not in the top-10. Soccer America dropped the Bruins two spots to No. 5 in its weekly poll.
