UCLA Wins Four in Palm Springs, Georgia Game Rained Out
UCLA extended its season-opening winning streak to 13 games last weekend at the Palm Springs Classic at the Big League Dreams complex in Cathedral City, CA. The Bruins opened play on Friday afternoon with a 9-0 five-inning victory over Baylor. The Bruins connected for three home runs in the game as Lisa Dodd struck out four to get the one-hit shutout victory. The Bruins then moved from the Wrigley Field replica to the Yankee Stadium replica and started the scheduled game against No. 12 Tennessee. The Bruins got on the board early against UT starter Stacey Jennings, scoring on the second lead-off home run of the season by Caitlin Benyi. UCLA scored two unearned runs in the bottom of the third inning to account for the 3-0 final score.

Saturday's games featured a Big Ten schedule for the Bruins, as UCLA defeated Northwestern 5-1 and Penn State 5-2. In the day's opener, Keira Goerl pitched a two-hitter, allowing one unearned run while striking out seven. The Bruins connected on four home runs in the game, hit by Benyi, Andrea Duran, Claire Sua and freshman Ashley Herrera. In the nightcap, Michelle Turner started her first game in the circle since last May, getting the win while striking out six batters. Goerl earned the first save of her career, coming in and striking out five of the seven batters she faced in the game.
