Men's Track & Field Travels To 2002 NCAA Indoor Championship

UCLA Men's T & F Team Travels To Fayetteville, AR This Weekend (March 8-9) for 2002 NCAA Indoor Championship, Same Day Results on www.hogwired.com. Bruin Men Opened Outdoor Competition last Saturday (March 2) at UC Irvine, Winning the All-Cal Cup.

Art Venegas' UCLA men's track and field team travels to Fayetteville, AR this weekend (March 8-9) for the 2002 NCAA Indoor Championships, held at the Randal Tyson Track Center and hosted by the University of Arkansas.

On Friday (March 8), the first event is the women's 20-pound weight throw final at noon CST and the final event is the men's distance medley relay at 9 p.m. CST. On Saturday (March 9, all finals), the first event starts at 2 p.m. CST (men's 35-pound weight throw) and the final event is at 8:10 p.m. CST (men's 4 X 400m relay).

NCAA Indoor
The Bruins will send four competitors to Fayetteville this weekend - senior Michael Lipscomb in the 200m, junior Scott Wiegand in the shot put, sophomore Dan Ames in the shot put and senior Scott Moser in the 35-pound weight throw.

  • Lipscomb's 200m time of 20.99 is No. 8 on the NCAA chart. Last spring at the Pac-10 meet, he placed fifth in the 200m.
  • Wiegand, the biggest Bruin at 6-8 and 323 pounds, is No. 7 in the shot put, with a mark of 64-7.75. For Wiegand, who started his Bruin career as an offensive lineman on the UCLA football team, this will be his first NCAA appearance.
  • Ames' shot put effort of 62-5.75 is No. 12. He earned All-American status at last year's NCAA Indoor, placing ninth in the shot put (61-0.75, top eight Americans).
  • Moser's 70-10 mark in the 35-lb. weight throw is No. 8. In 2001, Moser was an All-American at the NCAA Outdoor in the discus (third-place, 197-4), won the Pac-10 discus title (206-8) and earned All-American status at the NCAA Indoor in the shot put (eighth-place, 61-8.25).

    Outdoor Season Begins
    On the same day (March 2) several UCLA athletes were competing at a last chance qualifying indoor meet in Seattle, WA, the Bruins also sent a team to their 2002 outdoor opener, the All-Cal Cup, held at Irvine and hosted by UC Irvine. The Bruin men won the team title with 230 points, followed by UC Santa Barbara (221), UC Irvine (194), UC Riverside (163) and UC San Diego (161).

    UCLA had 11 events winners - on the track, freshman Mario Bassani in the 200m (22.22), freshman Ben Aragon in the 800m (1:53.07), freshman Jonathan Williams in the 110m hurdles (14.78), junior John Barbieri in the 400m hurdles (53.57), junior Justin Patananan in the 3000m steeplechase (9:04.77), UCLA's 4 X 400m relay (3:18.11), and in the field, junior Kevin Weaver in the high jump (6-9.75), sophomore Pat Luke in the pole vault (16-6), sophomore Oliver Jackson in the long jump (23-3.25nwi), the Bruins went one-through-four in the discus (1. Moser, 190-8, 2. Ames, 189-8, 3. Wiegand, 177-9, 4. freshman Jason Rider, 169-8) and Moser in the hammer throw (204-5).

    The Bruins will host their first home meet of the season on March 16 at Drake Stadium, vs. California and Washington State.
