Women's Water Polo Heads to San Diego, CA for NCAA Championships

The No. 2 UCLA women's water polo team will head to San Diego, CA this weekend to participate in the NCAA Championships hosted by UC San Diego. The Bruins are seeded second in the four-team tournament and will face third seeded Loyola Marymount on Saturday, May 10 at 3:00 PM. UCLA received this years at large bid on the strength of their 21-4 record, second place finish at the MPSF tournament and a 3-1 season record against USC.

Joining UCLA at the NCAA Championships will be first seeded Stanford University (20-2), third seeded Loyola Marymount University (23-8) and fourth seeded Indiana University (26-9).

About The Opponents

UCLA has a combined record of 20-17 against the opposing schools in this year's tournament. Against Stanford the Bruins are 14-17 all-time and 1-3 this season. In the team's last meeting the Cardinal defeated UCLA 3-2 in the fifth sudden victory overtime. UCLA is 5-0 all time against LMU, including a 2-0 record this season. UCLA defeated LMU 7-4 in the team's last meeting. UCLA has never faced Indiana.

MPSF Championships, April 25-27

UCLA entered the MPSF tournament seeded third and ranked number one in the nation with a 19-3 overall record (8-2 MPSF).

The Bruins got off to an impressive start in their opening game of the tournament with a 12-5 victory over Hawaii in the quarterfinals. Junior Natalie Golda led the Bruins with four goals.

With the win the Bruins advanced to the semi-finals to face USC in a game that would have NCAA Championship implications. In a game where both teams traded goals, four periods wouldn't be enough time to decide the outcome as the game went into two three minute overtimes with both teams tied at 5-5. USC struck first in the overtime, but in the second overtime period a goal by Natalie Golda with 1:46 remaining tied it at 6-6 and sent the game into a sudden victory overtime. period The Bruins got off to a shaky start in the first sudden death overtime period, allowing a breakaway on the Trojans first possession. However, USC was not able to convert the opportunity and on UCLA's very next possession, senior Jessica Lopez found the back of the net on a 6 on 5 opportunity to give the Bruins the 7-6 victory. Senior goalie Jaime Hipp was outstanding in net for the Bruins, recording thirteen saves, including four saves in overtime.

The Bruins MPSF Championship match against Stanford was a defensive contest throughout with the Cardinal scoring first early in the first period. After both teams went scoreless in the second period, UCLA tied the game at 1-1 in the third period with a goal from freshman Kelly Rulon. In the fourth period Stanford scored first, but the Bruins were able to counter back with a goal from freshman Lauren Heineck with 3:04 left in the game. Each of the overtime periods featured outstanding defensive play from both teams with goalkeeper Jaime Hipp recording six of her thirteen total saves in the overtime periods. Finally Stanford scored fifty-seven seconds into the fifth sudden victory overtime.

2003 Season Statistics

Junior Natalie Golda currently leads the Bruins with 49 goals scored, followed by freshman Kelly Rulon's 24 goals.

Senior Robin Beauregard leads the Bruins with 37 steals.

Freshman Kelly Rulon leads the Bruins with 31 assists.

Goalkeeper Jaime Hipp has recorded 178 saves on the year with a goals against average of 3.17

Radio Broadcast

This will be the third year in a row that there will be a broadcast available for UCLA's NCAA Championship games. The games will be available through TRZ Team Line, with more information to follow. Michael Sondheimer and Matt Armatio will provide commentary.
