Box Score

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - UC Santa Barbara scored four runs in the top of the ninth inning, thanks in part to a disputed and protested call, and the Gauchos defeated UCLA, 9-4 Friday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Heading into the ninth, UCSB held a 5-4 advantage but after an apparent missed interference call, UCLA Head Coach John Savage submitted a formal protest of the game while the Gauchos went on to score four times against four Bruin relievers.

UCLA (7-23) took an early 2-0 lead thanks to RBI singles from Josh Roenicke and Anthony Norman in the second inning. UCSB scored once in the third but Roenicke added another RBI single in the bottom of the inning to give the Bruins a 3-1 edge.

Santa Barbara (18-17) took its first and final lead of the game with four runs in the top of the seventh. Matt Aidem's base-clearing triple led the Gaucho charge. The Bruins added a run in the bottom of the eighth to close the gap to one but UCSB added four insurance runs in the ninth.

On the protested play, UCLA second baseman Sean Carpenter was apparently bumped by Gaucho base runner Matt Kalafatis, who was running from first to second on a high chopper. Carpenter was unable to turn the double play but recorded the out at first. After lengthy discussions between the umpiring crew and both head coaches, Kalafatis was called out and the original batter, Travis LeBouf was awarded first base.

Michael Martin (4-3) earned the win for the Gauchos, tossing a six innings and allowing three runs on seven hits. Alex McRobbie picked up his eighth save.

Hector Ambriz (2-4) was the hard luck loser, suffering the defeat after 6.2 innings pitched. He allowed five runs on five hits, but was removed from the game with one runner aboard in the seventh after discovering a blister on his throwing hand.

Roenicke, Norman and catcher Matt Sharp all contributed two hits for UCLA.
