Final Stats

MINNEAPOLIS - The UCLA women's volleyball team fell to No. 20 Minnesota 3-0 with game scores of 30-25, 30-26 and 30-28 in the Diet Coke Classic at the Sports Pavilion on Friday, Sept. 6. The Bruins return to action with two matches on Saturday, against No. 9 Northern Iowa at 8 am PT and against Rhode Island at 3 pm PT.

Minnesota rallied back from deficits in each of the three games on the night. That trend began in the first game when UCLA jumped out to a 10-4 lead. The Golden Gophers scored nine of the next 13 points to tie the score at 13, and took their first lead at 15-14. With the score tied at 18, Minnesota reeled off 10 of the next 15 points to make it 28-23 and moved on to take game one 30-25.

In the second game, the Bruins jumped out to 14-10 lead, but Minnesota battled back again to tie the score at 15-15. With the score tied at 24, the Golden Gophers reeled off four of the next five points to go up 28-25. After a point by each team, Minnesota closed it out to at 30-26 to take a 2-0 lead.

After trailing by as many as six points, the Golden Gophers found themselves down 25-22 in game three. However, Cassie Busse had four kills in the span of seven points to help lead Minnesota to a tie at 27. The Golden Gophers moved to a 29-28 lead, and Lisa unleashed a service ace to give Minnesota the match.

Sophomore Brynn Murphy led the Bruins with 12 kills on the evening, followed by Lauren Fendrick, who had nine kills and a team-high 10 digs in the match. Angela Eckmier led UCLA on the blocks with six block assists, while Heather Cullen downed seven kills with a .462 attack percentage.

"This was a close hard fought match between both teams," UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski. "The difference was they were a stronger team than us when it came to their service game and putting away kills."

Day two of the Diet Coke Classic on Saturday, Sept. 7, begins when No. 7 UCLA takes on No. 9 Northern Iowa at 10 a.m. The second match of the day will feature No. 20 Minnesota against Rhode Island at 12:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., No. 7 UCLA will take on Rhode Island. In the final match of the tournament the Golden Gophers take on Northern Iowa at 7:30 p.m
