The Bruins will round out their opening week with a game against San Diego State (7-8-3 in 1997) on Sunday Sept. 6 on the North Athletic Field at 3 pm. UCLA holds a 4-0-1 series record against the Aztecs.

Next Week - The Bruins will travel north to play in the USF Tournament in San Francisco. UCLA will play Loyola College of Baltimore at 5 pm on Sept. 12. UNC, Charlotte and UCLA will go head-to-head on Sunday Sept. 13 at 4 pm. This will be the first time UCLA will play both teams.

Pre-Season Polls - The Bruins are tied for 15th in the NSCAA/Umbro pre-season poll. This is the first time UCLA has made it in the NSCAA/Umbro pre-season poll. The Bruins will face No. 8 Nebraska and No. 24 Stanford this season.

1998 Outlook - The 1998 Bruins, under the tutelage of new head coach Todd Saldana, are entering a new era in Westwood. After recording an impressive 19-3- 0 record and a perfect 9-0 record in the Pac-10, the 1997 squad recorded UCLA's first-ever women's soccer Pac-10 championship and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.

The 1998 team looks to continue and perhaps surpass the success of the 1997 season. UCLA's goals for the 1998 season are to defend its 1997 Pac- 10 title and advance as far, if not farther, in the NCAA playoffs as last season. The Bruins lose seven extremely talented players yet return and welcome some of the most talented young athletes in the country. Sophomore Venus James, UCLA's second leading scorer in 1997, will look to lead the Bruin offense this season. Joining James will be seniors Larisa Kiremidjian and Liz Willemse. Staci Duncan will lead the talented class of newcomers, which includes Tracey Milburn, Sarah Lazaro and Courteney Cosso.

1997 Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Sommer Hammoud will lead the midfield this season. Juniors Beth Thompson and Bree Edwards combine to give the Bruins a strong defensive presence in the middle. One of Soccer America's Top 25 High School Recruits, freshman Breana Boling will make a big impact for UCLA this season. Senior Louise Lieberman, sophomore Janine Altman, redshirt freshman Megan Quinn and freshmen Lauren Emblem, Vanessa Clark and Sarah Morgan round out the talent at the midfield position.

Junior Skylar Little will lead a much faster defense this season. Sophomore Karissa Hampton and also one of the Top 25 High School Recruits by Soccer America, Krista Boling will join Little in the back. Freshmen Courtney Arrigo and sophomore Chrysta Elliott will likely come off the bench this season. With another year under their belts the UCLA goalkeepers have gained more playoff and playing experience. UCLA's all-time career and individual wins leader, junior Lindsay Culp will lead the Bruin goalkeepers this season. Competing for the position will be sophomore Julie Kapcala and redshirt freshman CiCi Peterson.

Combining UCLA's talent and depth with its competitive schedule, 1998 UCLA women's soccer will be nothing short of exciting.
