No. 9 Bruins Post 6-1 Victory Over UCSB

Sept. 5, 2004

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - The ninth-ranked UCLA women's soccer team, behind a three-goal performance from senior Kim Devine, registered a dominating 6-1 victory over visiting UC Santa Barbara at Drake Stadium Sunday. With the win, UCLA improves to 3-0 on the year. UCSB falls to 1-3.

UCLA didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard, scoring just 58 seconds into the match. Sophomore forward Bristyn Davis tallied the first of her two goals on the day, chipping in a 30-yard shot just over the outstretched hands of UCSB goalkeeper Jamie Considine. The Bruins scored again about seven minutes later when freshman Danesha Adams headed in a Kendal Billingsley free kick, making the score 2-0 UCLA.

UCSB cut the lead in half in the 23rd minute of play when Chandi Bickford punched in a shot off a pass from Allie Kueny. Bickford entered the match as a substitute less than a minute before scoring. That was as close as the Gauchos would get however, as the Bruins managed to score again just before halftime. In the 43rd minute of play, Davis put in her second goal of the match with a left-footed strike at the top of the box. Crystal James beat her defender, sending in a perfect ball to Davis for the goal.

The second half of play belonged to Devine, as she scored all three UCLA goals within minutes of each other. Her first goal came at the 54:06 mark off an assist from Michelle Gleason. Just 38 seconds later she scored again after receiving a cross in the box from Davis. Devine's third goal came less than a minute after that (57:31), as Adams sent in a through ball up the middle, creating a one-on-one situation with Considine. Devine sent a shot into the right corner of the goal, completing the hat trick.

Freshman goalkeeper Valerie Henderson turned in another solid showing, giving up one goal in 75 minutes of play. Sophomore Arianna Criscione came in for the last 15 minutes, making one save. Due to the large margin of victory, a total of 20 UCLA players, including nine newcomers, saw action Sunday.

With a goal and an assist on the day, Adams has now tallied 11 points (5g, 1a) in just the first three matches. She has also recorded the game-winning goal in each contest. Davis is right behind Adams in scoring with 10 points (4g, 2a).

Twice before the Bruins have started a season 3-0. In 1997, UCLA moved out to a 6-0 record before falling to UConn. The 2001 Bruins were 11-0 until a loss at Santa Clara.

UCLA hits the road next week for the Virginia Nike Soccer Classic in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Bruins will take on the host Cavaliers on Friday at 7:00 p.m. (EST) before squaring off with Maryland on Sunday at Noon (EST).
