On Saturday, August 25th, the UCLA Men's and Women's Soccer teams hosted the second annual Free Youth Soccer Clinic to kick off the 2001 soccer season. Over 200 children came to UCLA's North Athletic Field to participate in the clinic. Fans had the opportunity to meet with members of both teams, receive one-on-one instruction, watch both teams scrimmage and get autographs from their favorite Bruin players.
"It was a great experience for everyone. The community comes to support us so much during the season, and it's a nice opportunity for us to meet all of our young fans and really give back," said women's assistant coach, Lisa Shattuck.
Among the clinic participants was a large group of children from the Cypress Park who enjoyed a bus ride to the clinic compliments of PLAYS (Parks for LA Youth Soccer), a joint effort between the Center for Law and the Public Interest & People for Parks.
PLAYS Director and UCLA Men's Soccer Alum Robbie LaBelle commented, "On behalf of the Anahuak Youth Soccer Club from North East LA, I'd like to complement the UCLA Men's and Women's Soccer programs for a day that all the kids of the club will remember. For most of them, it was their first time on the campus and their first time seeing the teams play. It's also a testament to the Athletic Department to accommodate such a diverse array of children. Muchas Gracias and Buenos Suerte to the UCLA Men's and Women's soccer teams."
