LOS ANGELES (AP) - Drew Bennett, a junior who has attempted only 11 passes during his career at UCLA, will start at quarterback for the 16th-ranked Bruins in their season-opener against Boise State on Sept. 4.

UCLA coach Bob Toledo also announced after Monday morning's practice that freshman Cory Paus will serve as Bennett's backup and definitely play against Boise State.

Cade McNown, now a member of the Chicago Bears, started the last 43 games at quarterback for the Bruins, and 44 of 47 in his career. As McNown's backup, Bennett was 3-of-6 for 52 yards and one touchdown two years ago, and 3-of-5 for 24 yards and one TD last season.

Bennett, who entered summer drills as UCLA's first-string quarterback, was 4-of-5 for 50 yards in a scrimmage last Saturday, while Paus was 5-of-9 for 55 yards.

Bennett is the only quarterback on the UCLA roster who has thrown a pass for the Bruins. Other QBs on the roster are sophomore Scott McEwan and freshman Ryan McCann. Paus and McCann both redshirted last year.

It was also announced Monday that wide receiver Danny Farmer might not play against Boise State after spraining his left ankle in Saturday's scrimmage.

Farmer, a 6-foot-4, 210-pounder, set several school records last season when he caught 58 passes for 1,274 yards and nine touchdowns.
