WESTWOOD, Calif. - Defending NCAA men's soccer champion UCLA earned the pre-season No. 1 ranking by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). The UCLA women, the defending Pac-10 champions, earned a tie for the No. 15 pre-season ranking.

The UCLA men, guided by 1997 NSCAA Coach of the Year Sigi Schmid, returns seven starters from last year's championship team, including Final Four Offensive MVP Seth George, who scored 16 goals a year ago. In addition, ten Bruin players currently hold spots on U.S. National Team pools.

The Bruins in 1998 will face three Top 10 teams (Indiana, Washington and South Carolina), as well as 21st-ranked Stanford.

The Bruin women, guided by first-year head coach Todd Saldana, returns Pac-10 Freshman of the Year Sommer Hammoud, as well as all-conference selection Beth Thompson, 25-point scorer Venus James and defender Skylar Little. UCLA in 1998 will face No. 8 Nebraska and No. 24 Stanford.
