Berkeley, CA - The No. 15 Bruins completed their 2003 dual-match regular season on Saturday afternoon against No. 5 California, falling to the Bears 6-1 at the Hellman Tennis Center in Berkeley. Anya Loncaric won the point for the Bruins on the afternoon, coming from behind to win at the fifth singles spot. UCLA finishes at 13-10 overall, 4-4 in Pac-10 play.
Cal (19-4, 6-1) won the doubles point. The third-ranked doubles team of Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones defeated Feriel Esseghir and Laura Gordon, 8-3 on court one, while UCLA's Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild beat Jieun Jacobs and Jody Scheldt, 9-7. The Golden Bears secured the point with an 8-6 win by Catherine Lynch and Jessica Shu over Loncaric and Shilpa Joshi.
At the first singles position, No. 7 Kops-Jones beat 71st-ranked Wild, 7-5, 6-3. No. 31 Fusano beat Esseghir 6-7, 6-4, (10-4) on court two, and Lynch beat Gregg, 6-3, 6-0 on court three. On court four, Jacobs beat Gordon, 6-0, 6-3, and California's Brooke Borisoff beat Joshi 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
Loncaric's win over Jody Scheldt came at the fifth singles position, 3-6, 7-5, (13-11).
The Bruins will participate in the Pac-10 Championships, which commence Thursday, April 24, in Ojai, CA. The participating UCLA players as well as the entire tournament draw will be announced later in the week.
