The No. 12 UCLA women's tennis team picked up where it left off before its two-and-a-half week layoff for final exams and spring break, defeating conference foe Arizona 6-1 on Friday afternoon at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
The Bruins (11-5, 2-1 Pac-10) won the doubles matches on courts one and two to gain the day's first point. Jackie Carleton and Feriel Esseghir beat Emilie Scribot and Maja Mlakar 8-6, while Sarah Gregg and Susi Wild beat Debbie Larocque and Kristy Randono 8-5. Arizona (5-8, 0-2) won on court three, where Dianne Hollands and Kelly Perry defeated Laura Gordon and Anya Loncaric, 8-5.
Wild, Gregg, Gordon, Loncaric, and Shilpa Joshi notched singles wins to help clinch the victory. Wild beat Mlakar 6-4, 6-3, while Gregg knocked off Hollands 6-4, 7-5. The Bruins swept the back three courts, with Gordon beating Larocque 6-4, 6-4, Loncaric coming from behind to defeat Perry 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, and Joshi beating Randono 6-4, 6-0.
Arizona claimed its only point on court one when 20th-ranked Scribot knocked off 23rd-ranked Carleton 6-3, 7-5.
UCLA returns to the court tomorrow to face No. 8 Arizona State (8-4, 1-1) at noon.
