UCLA junior outside hitter Lauren Fendrick (Carlsbad, CA/Carlsbad HS) has been named to the Verizon Academic All-America second team in the University division. This is the second consecutive year a Bruin has been named to the Verizon second team, as current U.S. National Team member Elisabeth Bachman earned the honor last year. Fendrick becomes the fourth Bruin women's volleyball player ever to earn the national honor, joining Bachman, Kelly Flannigan (third team, 1995) and Julie Bremner (1993 first team, 1992 third team).
One of three juniors on the second, Fendrick holds a 3.938 GPA with a major of pre-cognitive science. The University Division first team was comprised completely of seniors. Fendrick is a three-year starter at outside hitter for the Bruins. and completed her junior season last Friday in Long Beach, CA, as the Bruins lost to top-ranked and undefeated Long Beach State in the NCAA Regional semifinal.
Fendrick finished the season as UCLA's kill leader with 398 kills for a 3.94 per-game average. She also had the top attack percentage for a Bruin outside hitter, connecting at a .287 clip. She will begin her senior season with 932 career kills and 779 career digs.
UCLA finished its 2001 season with a 21-9 overall record, and became the only school in the country to reach the NCAA's women's volleyball elite eight in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
