Final Stats

SAN DIEGO - An RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning by sophomore right fielder Caitlin Benyi sealed the 19th victory of the season for UCLA (19-0) on Saturday afternoon at SDSU Field, as the Bruins defeated host San Diego State 1-0 at the SDSU Softball Tournament. The game was played in front of a packed house of 701 fans on the SDSU campus.

The Bruins threatened in the bottom of the second inning, loading the bases on a lead-off single by Jodie Legaspi, a single by Lisa Dodd and a two-out walk by pinch-hitter Whitney Holum, but UCLA was unable to convert the situation to a run.

UCLA had two runners on base again in the bottom of the fourth inning with a lead-off single by Legaspi, who was sacrificed to second by Emily Zaplatosch before Kristen Dedmon drew a two-out walk, but the pair was unable to advance.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, UCLA loaded the bases once again on back-to-back one-out singles to right field by Jodie Legaspi and Emily Zaplatosch. After an impressive hit-saving catch by SDSU shortstop Bianca Cruz accounted for the second out of the inning, Kristen Dedmon drew a walk to load the bases for UCLA, but pinch-hitter Ashley Herrera popped out to end the inning with a still scoreless game.

Keira Goerl dominated the top of the seventh inning, recording three strikeouts, all looking. The Bruins went down in order in the bottom of the seventh, taking the game to the eighth inning and invoking the International Tiebreak Rule, which places the last out of the previous inning to start each half-inning.

Following the first pitch of the top of the eighth inning, sophomore catcher Emily Zaplatosch threw a perfect strike to Lisa Dodd at second base and picked off pinch runner Bridgette Caron, erasing the tiebreak runner. After a walk gave the Aztecs a runner at first base, Goerl recorded her 10th strikeout of the game for the second out of the inning. A fielders choice by Joann Figueroa ended the inning, bring the Bruins to bat.

Stephanie Ramos was the tiebreak runner for the Bruins in the eighth inning, but she was thrown out on a fielders choice on Claire Sua's attempted sacrifice bunt. Michelle Turner replaced Sua at first base, but was erased when she left early during the at-bat of Legaspi, who would ground out to end the inning.

In the top of the ninth, the Aztecs were unable to advance their tiebreak runner past second base, as Goerl pitched a 1-2-3 inning, recording the final out with a quick glove in the circle with an easy toss to first for the final out.

Legaspi opened the bottom of the ninth on second base as UCLA's tiebreak runner with Zaplatosch at the plate. For the second time in the game, Zaplatosch was able to put down a perfect sacrifice bunt, this time advancing Legaspi to third base and bringing Lisa Dodd to the plate with one out. Dodd was called out on strikes, SDSU intentionally walked Kristen Dedmon, but Ashley Herrera was unable to convert, striking out to end the ninth inning.

Goerl again controlled the game in the top of the 10th inning, although a wild pitch did allow tiebreak runner Meagan Hartung to advance to third base. Goerl recorded her 11th and 12th strikeouts of the game, a new season-high, in the inning, holding the Aztecs scoreless once again.

Herrera started the bottom of the tenth inning on second base as UCLA's tiebreak runner. After Caitlin Benyi was unsuccessful in trying to put down a sacrifice bunt to advance Herrera to third base, Benyi roped a ground ball single straight through the middle of the Aztec infield, and Herera was easily able to beat the throw in from the outfield, scoring from second base to end the game.

UCLA returns to action on Sunday with two games on the final day of the SDSU Softball Tournament. The Bruins open the day with an 11 am game against Nevada before playing Cal Poly at 3 pm.
