LOS ANGELES - Four UCLA women's soccer players have been selected to participate in a training camp with the U.S. Under-21 Women's National Team running from Jan. 23-29 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The camp will be the first of the year for the oldest of the USA's five youth national teams.
Headlining the list of UCLA players is U-21 veteran defender Jill Oakes, who has already played on two U-21 teams that captured Nordic Cup titles in 2001 and 2004, as well as a FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship in 2002. Defender Mary Castelanelli, forward Danesha Adams and goalkeeper Valerie Henderson are also scheduled to join Oakes in Carson. All three have been involved with various U.S. Youth National Teams in the past, but this is their first call-up with the U-21s.
The U.S. U-21s are focused on preparing for the annual Nordic Cup, held every summer in northern Europe. The top competition in the world for U-21 women, this year's Nordic Cup will be played in Sweden in late July. The USA has won an unprecedented six straight Nordic Cups, playing against Europe's best teams.
