Los Angeles, Calif. - On a rare, stormy day at the Sunset Canyon Recreation Center, the No. 3 UCLA women's water polo team defeated the No. 6 UC Berkeley Golden Bears, 6-4. UCLA moves its record to 12-2, 5-0 in the MPSF conference, while California drops to 5-7, 1-2.
The first quarter of the game was very physical, with each team having three ejections. California scored the first goal of the game from a shot by Brittani Llorente. A little over a minute later, Kelly Rulon notched the first Bruin goal to tie up the game. Later in the quarter, Monique Blanchard scored for UCLA, putting the team ahead for what would be the rest of the game.
In the second quarter, the UCLA defense stepped up, holding the Bears scoreless. UCLA added two more goals, including a second goal by Rulon, to pull away to a 4-1 half time lead.
At 4:23 in the third, the Bruins extended their lead to 5-1, after a goal by Anne Belden. The Bears refused to give up. Allison Gold scored her first goal of the game at 4:07. UCLA responded with a goal by Molly Cahill. At 1:25, Elsie Windes scored on a four-meter penalty shot, bringing her team within three goals.
In the fourth, the Bruins were held scoreless. Gold scored her second goal of the game for California with 1:46 left. UCLA ended up winning 6-4, which is the exact same score and outcome as the previous UCLA vs. California matchup in the Stanford Invitational earlier this season. Emily Feher had six saves for UCLA. Heather Stuart had four saves for the Bears in the game. The ejection count for the game was 6 against UCLA, including one four-meter penalty and eight against California. UCLA had 19 shots on goal compared to Berkeley's 22.
UCLA will face Cal State San Bernardino and UC San Diego on Saturday, March 4th at La Jolla. The next exciting Bruin home games are on March 11th and 12th against Arizona State and San Diego State.
