TUCSON, AZ - The UCLA women's volleyball team lost its Pac-10 opener on Friday night, falling 3-1 at Arizona. Game scores were 32-30, 26-30, 31-29, 30-23. UCLA (7-4, 0-1 Pac-10) was led offensively by sophomore outside hitter Brittany Ringel, who downed a career-high 22 kills with a .391 attack percentage for the match. Arizona improves to 6-3, 1-0 Pac-10 with the win.

For the Bruins Brittany Ringel dominated game one, putting away five of her first swings for kills and finishing with eight for the game. The teams played even early, with 10 ties occurring to the 18-18 mark. From there, the Wildcats started to pull away, but the Bruins fought back to tie the game at 27-27. Arizona then put together two straight points to serve a 29-27 game point, but a Cira Wright kill followed by a block from Wright and Brittany Ringel gave the Bruins new life at 29-29. The teams would also tie at 30-30 before a Bruin service error and Kim Glass kill gave Arizona the 32-30 opening game victory.

After a close start to game two, the Bruins started to pull away, scoring six straight points to extend a 19-13 lead before the Wildcats scored a point to stop the run, but UCLA would never relinquish the lead taking game two by a 30-26 margin and sending the teams to the locker room tied at one game apiece.

UCLA again pulled out to a lead in game three, with a margin as large as three points at 27-24 before the Wildcats stormed back, forcing a tie at 28-28. The Bruins called timeouts after consecutive rallies, falling behind 29-28 before a Wright kill tied the game at 29-29. Two straight Glass kills gave the Wildcats the 31-29 win and a 2-1 match lead.

The teams were tied five times before the Wildcats forced the match into the television timeout at 15-14. From there, the Bruins never regained the lead, and Arizona earned the game and match victory with a 30-23 win.

Brittany Ringel had one of the best statistical matches of her Bruin career, finishing with 22 kills and a .391 attack percentage, leading all players in kills. Two other Bruins, Heather Cullen and Cira Wright, downed double-figure kills with 15 and 13, respectively. Wright finished the match with a .500 attack percentage on 20 swings. Sophomore libero Chrissie Zartman led the Bruins with 13 digs in the match, and Wright led the Bruins with three block assists, although UCLA was out-blocked by a 16-4 margin.

UCLA returns to action on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, AZ, with a 7 pm start against Arizona State.
