Nov. 5, 2001
Senior Robert Thomas (Imperial, CA/Imperial HS) of the UCLA Football Team was selected as the UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week for the week of Oct. 29-Nov. 4.
Thomas, a 2001 Butkus Award semifinalist for the second straight season and a 2001 Lombardi Award semifinalist, enjoyed a monster game against Washington State. He was credited with 18 tackles (eight solos), including two for loss (0.5 sacks). The last Bruin to make more tackles in a game was All-American safety Eric Turner, who made 21 against Oregon in 1989. Thomas has now led the Bruins in tackles in seven straight games (all but Alabama), and he ranks first in the Pac-10 in tackles (11.13) and tackles for loss (2.50) and tied for fifth in sacks (0.62).
On the year, Thomas leads the Bruins with a career-high 89 tackles (57 solos and 32 assists). Twenty of his tackles have been for losses, putting him on pace to shatter Marvcus Patton's school record of 22 tackles for loss in a season. He currently ranks third on the single-season list, and the two players ahead of him (Patton and Donnie Edwards) are both currently starters for the Kansas City Chiefs.
This is Thomas' first career UCLABruins.com Student-Athlete of the Week honor.
Also nominated: Ashley Bowles (women's volleyball), Brett Ormsby (men's water polo), Sara Platzer (women's swimming and diving), Stephanie Rigamat (women's soccer), Sara Walker (women's tennis) and Zach Wells (men's soccer).
