Kapono Leads Bruins Past Long Beach St.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jason Kapono tied a career high with 28 points in leading UCLA to its first victory of the season, an 81-58 decision over Long Beach State on Sunday at Pauley Pavilion.

It was the first win of the season for UCLA, which started 0-2 for the first time since the 1961-62 season. The unranked Bruins opened the season ranked No. 14 but loss their season opener at home to San Diego and then fell to Duke in the John Wooden Tradition game played in Indianapolis.

They beat Long Beach State on the strength of shooting by Kapono, who made 12-of-19 shots from the field, including four-of-10 from 3-point range. The senior forward also added seven rebounds and three assists for the Bruins.

TJ. Cummings also scored 12 points and Jon Crispin added 11 points for UCLA (1-2).

Tony Darden scored 14 points and reserve Chris Jenkins added 10 points for the 49ers (1-4), who lost their third consecutive game.

The teams were tied at 22 when UCLA used an 8-0 spurt to take a 30-22 lead with 1:57 left in the first half.

Kapono then scored eight points during a 17-4 run in the second half that extended UCLA's lead to 58-37 with 11:32 to play.

UCLA shot 49 percent from the floor while Long Beach State made 40 percent of its field-goal attempts.
