Dec. 2, 2003
The Silicon Valley Football Classic (SVFC) organization formally announced the two teams that will be invited to participate in SVFC Bowl IV. Fresno State University (7-5) of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) has been chosen along with UCLA (6-6) of the Pac-10 Conference to go head-to-head on December 30, 2003. This will be the first time the SVFC has matched two California teams since its inception in 2000.
The decision came early this evening when the SVFC selection committee convened in a conference call. Present in the call were Greg Jamison, SVFC Chairman; Dan Fenton, Bowl President; C. Jay Key, Executive Director; Karl Benson, commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference; Joe Guerra, budget and policy director for the Mayor of San Jos?; Dr. Joseph Crowley, interim president of San Jose State University.
"We are very pleased with the decision in matching Fresno State and UCLA at this year's Silicon Valley Football Classic," said Greg Jamison, SVFC chairman and president and CEO of Silicon Valley Sports and Entertainment Enterprises. "In terms of Washington versus UCLA, both are great teams with excellent programs, but one of the main considerations was the head-to-head competition."
In addition to matching two California teams, this is the first year the SVFC will include a Pac-10 eligible team.
"I am very pleased that the members of the SVFC selection committee has chosen UCLA to participate in the 2003 game against the Bulldogs of Fresno State," said Dan Guerrero, UCLA Athletic Director. "We know that the Board of Directors, staff, City of San Jos?, and the San Jos? Convention and Visitors Bureau have worked very hard to make this a special bowl experience for the two universities selected to participate. UCLA is looking forward to participating in a post season bowl, and Karl Dorrell's first season as head coach gives the coaching staff and student athletes an opportunity to continue to grow and develop as a program. UCLA has many alumnae and fans in the San Jos? Bay Area and we will strongly encourage them and other Bruin supporters throughout California and beyond, to come out and support their team on December 30th."
"Being chosen to participate in Bowl IV of the Silicon Valley Football Classic is a great tribute to the Bulldog team and program," said Scott Johnson, Athletic Director of Fresno State University. "This is a great way to end our season, and there is no doubt in my mind this match up will be an exciting showcase of competition and team spirit between the Bulldogs and the well-respected Bruins."
