Men's Tennis Prepares For UCSB And No.19 USC

The UCLA men's tennis team (14-2 overall, 2-0 Pac-10) will host UC Santa Barbara (4-8) on Wednesday, March 29 at 2 pm at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Wednesday's match between UCLA and UC Santa Barbara was originally scheduled for February 16 but was postponed due to rain. Also this week, the Bruins travel across town to battle No. 19 USC (12-5, 4-1) on Friday, March 31 at 1:30 pm.

About the Opponents
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos currently own a 4-8 dual match record under first year head coach Marty Davis. In the latest ITA Rankings, UC Santa Barbara is not ranked, however, senior Simon Shen is listed at No. 52 in singles. In their 22 meetings with UCLA, the Gauchos have won only one match. Last year, UC Santa Barbara owned a 4-15 overall record.

The USC Trojans are 12-5 overall and 4-1 in the Pac-10 under 21-year head coach Dick Leach. UCLA defeated USC 5-2 at home earlier this season and will be looking to post its fifth consecutive victory over the Trojans since suffering a 3-4 loss to them in 1998. All-time, UCLA leads the series against USC 51-29. Three Trojans are currently listed in the ITA Singles Rankings: No. 22 Patrick Gottesleben, No. 34 Daniel Langre and t100 Andrew Park. In doubles, the team of Ryan Moore and Nick Rainey are ranked No. 13, while the duo of Gottesleben and Langre are ranked No. 41.

Bruins Sit Atop Latest ITA Rankings After posting its second win over then-No. 3 Duke and an earlier win over then-No. 4 Florida, UCLA moved up two spots from last week's poll to No. 1 with a 48.15 point-per-match average. The Bruins are beginning their second stint at the No. 1 spot after having opened the season at No. 1 and occupying that spot until February 16. In the latest ITA Individual Rankings which were released on March 15, the Bruins' three previously ranked singles players and one doubles team all moved up. Senior co-captain Brandon Kramer, who currently owns a 13-3 dual match record, improved from No. 53 to No. 33. Senior Jong-Min Lee moved up 36 spots to No. 37, while freshman Jean-Julien Rojer is now slated at No. 63. The doubles team of Kramer and Lee currently occupy the No. 8 spot.

UCLA vs. Duke
The UCLA men's tennis team defeated Duke 5-2 on Tuesday, March 14 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Bruins took an early lead when they clinched the doubles point after making a clean sweep in doubles play. On court No. 3, UCLA's tandem of Lassi Ketola and Travis Rettenmaier pulled ahead of Duke's Porter Jones and Michael Yani 3-2 before Duke was forced to retire. Earlier in the match, Yani had been hit in the eye with a ball and played with an eye patch until he withdrew from competition. Court No. 2 was next to finish, as UCLA's duo of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer cruised to an 8-4 win over Duke's Andres Pedroso and Ted Reuger. In the top position, the UCLA team of Brandon Kramer and Jong-Min Lee trailed 0-1, then pulled ahead 2-1 and did not give up the lead, upsetting Duke's Doug Root and Ramsey Smith, ranked No. 3 in the nation, 8-6.

In singles action, Duke secured the first singles point of the day when Jones defeated Ketola 6-2, 6-1 on court No. 5. Next to finish was court No. 6, where Bruin freshman Erfan Djahangiri bageled Marko Cerenko 6-0 in the first set and held on for a 7-6(2) win in the second. Kramer, ranked 53 nationally, put the Bruins ahead 3-1 when he won 6-3, 6-4 over No. 37 Doug Root on court No. 2.

The Blue Devils earned their second and final point of the day when Pedroso, ranked No. 43 in the nation, defeated Grinda, who recently returned to the singles lineup after suffering back and shoulder injuries, 6-4, 7-5 on court No. 3. UCLA clinched the match when Lee, ranked No. 73 in the nation, bested No. 21 Ramsey Smith 6-4, 6-2 in the top position. Last to finish was Rojer, who fell to Duke's Joel Spicher 5-7 in the first set and then battled back 6-0, 6-4 on court No. 4.

Next Up
The Bruins head to Northern California next week to battle No. 3 Stanford on Friday, March 7 at 1:30 pm and California on Saturday, April 8 at noon.
