INDIANAPOLIS - J.J. Redick scored 20 points as sixth-ranked Duke beat the 14th-ranked Bruins 84-73 at the Wooden Tradition in a game pitting two programs with a total of 14 national titles. UCLA begins the season at 0-2.

Coach Wooden gave Duke a trophy for winning the game. Current UCLA coach Steve Lavin gave explanations of the 0-2 record, pointing to 2-2 starts last season and in 1996-97, both teams that wound up in the NCAA regionals.

"The goal is to go undefeated. You have to have that goal," UCLA Coach Lavin said. "Some years you have to be more realistic than others."

Lavin asked for patience from UCLA fans.

"We're still a work in progress," he said. "We have a long way to go. We've just got to get better as a team in practice."

Nick Horvath added 16 points to help Duke improve to 7-1 against the Bruins under coach Mike Krzyzewski.

The Blue Devils (3-0) used a 22-6 burst in the second half to open a 21-point lead. Daniel Ewing started the run with a 3-pointer, and Redick contributed eight points.

While Redick was 5-for-10 from 3-poing range, he also displayed some nifty moves. He pump-faked Dijon Thompson on the baseline, then moved to the lane and drove for an uncontested layup.

Redick made it 65-44 with his fourth 3-pointer of the game. He credited Chris Duhon, with 14 points and eight assists, for finding him when he was open.

"Playing with Chris makes my job much easier because he's looking for me," Redick said.

UCLA trailed 70-53 when Jason Kapono (19 points) scored nine points to help the Bruins pull within nine.

But Duhon answered with consecutive layups to push the lead back to double-digits. Kapono sank a 3 with 1:31 left to make it 81-69, but the Bruins never got closer.

Thompson scored 15, and Cedric Bozeman 11 for UCLA.

Dahntay Jones scored 13 points, while Ewing added 12 for Duke, which shot 54.2 percent from the field. Ewing made three 3s, and Horvath was 7-for-10 from the floor.

UCLA, coming off an 86-82 loss in its home opener against San Diego, opened Saturday's game with a 12-2 run before missing 12 of its next 15 shots.

After the 12-2 run, Krzyzewski benched all the starters except for Duhon, and Redick, Horvath, Sean Dockery and Casey Sanders scored 13 straight points.

"The four kids coming off the bench did an incredible job of changing and turning the game around," Krzyzewski said. "We can play better, no question. But I don't want to take away from what the kids did. They had to play well to beat UCLA."

A 3 by Ewing stretched Duke's lead to 32-23, but Ray Young scored 10 points in the final four minutes as UCLA pulled to 40-33 at the half.
