UCLA's Dijon Thompson To Examine NBA Draft Status, Will Not Hire An Agent, Leaving Open Option To Return To UCLA For Senior Season

April 7, 2004

UCLA senior-to-be Dijon Thompson will make himself available for the upcoming 2004 NBA draft. However, Thompson is not going to hire an agent and therefore is leaving open the option of returning to UCLA for his final season (2004-05).

Thompson, UCLA's leading scorer last season (14.4), needs to send a letter to the NBA expressing his Draft interest by May 10. He wants to participate in the Chicago Pre-Draft Camp, held June 8-11. The 2004 NBA Draft is June 24 and a player with collegiate eligibility, who has not signed with an agent, must withdraw from draft consideration by June 17 to be able to return to college. Thompson, a history major, is enrolled in Spring quarter and will continue to attend classes at UCLA and participate with his teammates in the Bruins' spring workout schedule.

"I've been thinking about this since the end of the season," Thompson said. "I believe I owe it to myself, entering my senior year, to experience the Chicago camp and see where I stand among other potential draftees. My three years at UCLA have been very special to me and that's why I'm not getting an agent. I want the option of coming back and completing my Bruin career. "

Thompson, a 6-7, 197-pound guard/forward from Redondo Union HS, last season started 27 of UCLA's 28 games, including all 18 Pac-10 contests. He was second on the team in minutes (33.2) and assists (2.3), tied for third in rebounding (4.3) and shot 43.5 (146-336) from the field, 38.3 (49, team leader-128) from three-point range and 78.2 (61-78) from the foul line. He led the Bruins in scoring 12 times, including two of the last three games, scored in double figures on 25 occasions and had season-highs of 25 points vs. Oregon State (3/4) and nine rebounds vs. Vermont (11/29). A 2004 Pac-10 Honorable Mention selection, in the conference's final statistics (all games), Thompson was the league's No. 11 scorer (14.4).

Thompson on the Bruin three-point career charts is No. 11 in three-pointers (90) and No. 10 in three-point attempts (252). He's 58 points (942) from becoming the 45th Bruin in history to score 1,000 points.
