San Diego, Calif. -UCLA head football coach Jim Mora and Baylor coach Art Briles both participated in the annual Bridgepoint Education Holiday Bowl kickoff press conference in San Diego Wednesday night.
The press conference serves as the official launch of the San Diego Bowl Game Association's annual bowl season. The Holiday Bowl will take place on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 6:45pm at Qualcomm Stadium. This will be UCLA's first appearance in the Holiday Bowl, and the Bruins (9-4, Pac-12 Conference South Division Champions) will face Big 12 team Baylor (7-5, tied for fifth in Big 12) in the first meeting on the gridiron between the two schools.
"We are excited about the opportunity to play in the Holiday Bowl," Mora said. "We're excited about the events surrounding the game. We're excited about being in San Diego. What we're most excited about is the chance to compete against a quality opponent like Baylor. We're expecting it to be an outstanding game against two really good football teams. They're excited about the chance to go line it up and go after it."
Mora, who began his coaching career as the Defensive Quality Control Coach of the San Diego Chargers in 1985, returns to San Diego for the first time as a collegiate coach.
"I have a lot of familiarity with this area," he said. "I started my career with the San Diego Chargers a long time ago, and it will be fun to be back here playing in Qualcomm, where it all started for me."
UCLA's proximity to San Diego is of strong appeal to the Bruins.
"For us, it's a chance to play in front of a lot of our friends and families," Mora said. "It will be easy for them to get to the game, and it gives them a chance to spend the holiday with a lot of friends and family. I'm excited, and our kids are excited."
Briles has not seen much of UCLA due to time differences but is familiar with the Bruins' success this season.
"I know they had a real good run," he said. "I know they beat some really good people soundly, and that always concerns me as a coach, but we're pumped about being here. Our guys are excited. They look at it as a great destination, which it is, and that's where they wanted to go after our game the other night. It's a big deal.
