TEMPE, Ariz. - Freshman right-hander Gerrit Cole (4-8) registered nine strikeouts in 6.1 innings to lead the UCLA baseball team in a 4-0 loss at No. 3 Arizona State on Friday evening at Packard Stadium. Each team was limited to just four hits in the Pac-10 contest.

Arizona State right-hander Mike Leake (14-1) earned the victory, scattering four hits in a complete game, 12-strikeout shutout for the host Sun Devils (43-11, 20-5 Pac-10). Arizona State received a solo home run from third baseman Jared McDonald and a two-run homer from right fielder Matt Newman.

Cole absorbed the loss, allowing two runs and two hits and walking four batters in 6.1 innings.

Third baseman Gino Aielli went 1-for-4 with one double for UCLA (26-28, 14-11 Pac-10). Center fielder Blair Dunlap reached on a bunt single and right fielder Justin Uribe went 1-for-2 with one single and one hit-by-pitch. First baseman Cody Decker extended his hitting streak to a career-best and UCLA season-high 13 games.

The Sun Devils got on the board with McDonald's solo homer to right field in the fifth inning. Arizona State doubled its margin in the sixth inning, assuming a 2-0 cushion. With runners on the corners and nobody out, first baseman Riccio Torrez grounded out to third base, allowing catcher Carlos Ramirez to score.

Newman's two-run blast in the bottom of the eighth inning pushed Arizona State's advantage to 4-0.

UCLA and No. 3 Arizona State resume their three-game Pac-10 series on Saturday. Game time at ASU's Packard Stadium is 6:30 p.m. The Bruins and Sun Devils will close their regular season schedule with Sunday's game, slated for 1 p.m.

Game Notes: Cody Decker extended his hitting streak to a career-best 13 games - Decker becomes the first Bruin to hit safely in 13 consecutive games in one season since 2005, when Chris Jensen recorded an 18-game hitting streak...Gino Aielli recorded the Bruins' first hit of the game, belting a one-out double to the right-field fence in the top of the fourth inning...Gerrit Cole broke the school record for most strikeouts in one season by a freshman pitcher, pushing his season total to 104 (previous high was 98 strikeouts by Gavin Brooks in 2007)...UCLA limited Arizona State to its lowest hit total in a game at Packard Stadium since April 7, 2006 (had two hits in an 8-0 loss to Washington).
