NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Sophomore Stephany LaRosa had three singles, senior Devon Lindvall and sophomore Ally Carda each added two hits and senior B.B. Bates homered, but the ninth-ranked Bruins stranded eight on base and fell 3-2 at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday at Matador Diamond.
Carda picked up the loss to fall to 11-2, striking out five in 6 1/3 innings and giving up three runs, four hits and three walks. She struck out a pair in the second and had her lone 1-2-3 inning in the fifth. Carda was also aided by the play of junior Alyssa Tiumalu behind the plate, as the catcher threw out her third runner of the year on a stolen base attempt in the first and picked off a runner at second in the third. Carda, LaRosa and Lindvall combined for seven of the Bruins' nine hits.
The Bruins scored in their first at-bat. With one out, LaRosa walked and came home on Bates' 13th homer of the season to left-center to make it 2-0. UCLA however would get a runner thrown out at home in the second, leave runners at the corners in the fifth and the bases loaded in the seventh.
The Matadors cut their deficit to one with a score in the fourth. With one out, Sydney House singled up the middle and was pinch-run for by Leann Lopez, who scored one out later on a double to right by Crystal Maas to make it 2-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jennifer Tyler was hit by a pitch with one out and Tanna Bindi hit a walk-off, two-run homer to right to give the Matadors the 3-2 victory.
The Bruins head to the Long Beach State Invitational this weekend in Lakewood (Mayfair Park - 5720 Clark Ave.), facing #23 Virginia Tech (4:30 p.m.) and Long Beach State (7 p.m.) on Friday, South Alabama (2 p.m.) on Saturday and UNLV (9 a.m.) and Charleston Southern (1:30 p.m.) on Sunday.
