TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Tabi Love produced her first double-double as a Bruin with 24 kills and 11 digs, adding two aces and three blocks, while freshman Becca Strehlow had 47 assists, seven kills, seven digs and three blocks, as fifth-ranked UCLA defeated Arizona State in four on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-14, 24-26, 25-16.
The Bruins improve to 18-5 overall and 10-4 in Pac-12 play, while the Sun Devils fall to 16-11 and 5-9 in league action.
Senior Rachael Kidder had 14 kills, while junior Kelly Reeves added five kills, eight digs, five blocks and six assists. At the net, sophomore Zoë Nightingale and junior Mariana Aquino had seven and six blocks, respectively. In the backcourt, senior Bojana Todorovic (17) and junior Meg Norton (11) were each in double figures in digs. The Bruins hit .278 as a team.
The Sun Devils scored the first three points of the match, but the Bruins came back with the next five on kills by Love and Kidder, an ASU attack error, a Love ace and a Kidder solo block. A 7-2 run for Arizona State put the home team back up 10-7, tying its set-best edge of three. Trailing 12-10, UCLA scored three straight on two ASU errors and a Love kill to go up 13-12. The Sun Devils would tie it up at 13 and 15-all, but were unable to regain the lead.
Equal at 15, a 5-1 UCLA run put the visitors up by a set-best four. A Strehlow kill, a combo block by Aquino and Kidder and a Sun Devil attack error made it 18-15. After an ASU sideout, kills by Love and Kidder put the Bruins up 20-16. The Sun Devils moved to within one at 20-19 and 21-20, but could not get back to equal. UCLA scored four of the last five to win the opener 25-21. A Love kill and an Aquino ace made it 23-20, and after an ASU sideout, a Love kill and a Sun Devil attack error finished off the four-point win. Love led the Bruins with seven kills in the first set, while Kidder added three. Todorovic posted six digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .171 to .095.
The Bruins never trailed in taking the second set. Up 4-3, a Kidder kill, an ASU attack error and a Todorovic ace put the Bruins up 7-3. Leading 9-6, UCLA scored nine in a row to break it open. The first three points came on a Love kill, a Sun Devil attack error and a Nightingale/Reeves combo block. The next three occurred on a Reeves solo block, an ASU attack error and a combo roof from Love and Nightingale. Wrapping up the run were kills by Nightingale and Love and a Nightingale/Reeves combo block to make it an 18-6 score.
The lowest the Bruins' lead would get for the rest of the set was nine, while the highest advantage was 12. The set-clinching point came on an ASU service error, as UCLA won 25-14. Love again led the Bruins with five kills, while Kidder added three, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .458 to .000.
The third set featured 13 ties and four lead changes. Arizona State's biggest advantage of the set was four, while UCLA's was one. Tied at six, the Sun Devils scored three in a row to go ahead 9-6. Still up 12-11, another 3-0 mini-run for Arizona State put the home team up by four at 15-11. With the score 17-13, the Bruins scored four in a row on kills by Love and Kidder and two ASU attack errors to make it 17-all.
With UCLA still down 19-18, kills by Love and Kidder put the visitors up 20-19, the Bruins' first lead since 3-2. The Sun Devils quickly regained the lead with the next two, and despite ties at 21, 22 and 24-all, Arizona State claimed the third set. Down 24-22, an ASU service error and a Love kill tied things at 24 for the Bruins, however the Sun Devils scored the next two to win it 26-24. Love led UCLA with six kills, Kidder added four and Strehlow posted three. The Bruins were out-hit .257 to .186.
The Bruins scored four of the first five points of set four on an Aquino/Reeves combo block and kills by Reeves, Love and Nightingale. Trailing 7-5, the Sun Devils scored four of five to take a 9-8 edge. But it would be ASU's only lead of the set, as the Bruins scored the next two on a Sun Devil attack error and a Norton ace.
Leading 15-12, the Bruins scored 10 of the last 14 points to win the fourth 25-16. A Strehlow kill, a Kidder/Nightingale combo block and an ASU attack error made it 18-12. After a Sun Devil sideout, a Strehlow kill, an Aquino/Strehlow combo roof and a Kidder kill put the Bruins up 21-13. On top 23-16, kills by Reeves and Love finished off the nine-point win. Love once again led the Bruins with six kills, while Kidder added four. Norton and Todorovic each recorded six digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .387 to .050.
The Bruins continue their four-match road trip next week with contests at Colorado on Friday, Nov. 9 and Utah on Saturday, Nov. 10. Both matches start at 6 p.m. PT and will be streamed live via Pac-12 Digital.
