LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Stephany LaRosa reached base in all four of her plate appearances on two singles and two walks, as she also drove in a run, but the 12th-ranked Bruins dropped a 10-3 decision to #2 Arizona State on Saturday at Easton Stadium.

The Bruins (24-5, 1-1 Pac-12) had six hits as a team, with junior Jessica Hall, sophomores Ally Carda and Gracie Goulder and freshman Allexis Bennett posting one base knock.

In the circle, Carda (15-3) suffered the loss, striking out three in four innings and allowing seven runs, seven hits and six walks. Hall tossed three frames of relief and fanned three, giving up three runs, four hits and three walks.

A quiet game through two innings turned loud in the last five frames. In the top of the third, the Sun Devils (30-3, 1-1) scored four times. Alix Johnson led off the inning with an infield single up the middle and stole second and third bases. Cheyenne Coyle then reached on a fielder's choice grounder to third, and one out later, stole second. A single to left from Haley Steele brought in Johnson to make it 1-0, while a ground out to second off the bat of Elizabeth Caporuscio plated Coyle with the Sun Devils' second run. Nikki Girard followed with a single up the middle to bring home Steele to make it 3-0 and a double to left-center by Lucy Aubrecht scored Girard to make it 4-0.

The Bruins got one of the runs back in their half of the third. With one out, Goulder and senior B.B. Bates were hit by pitches and LaRosa singled to left-center to bring home Goulder to make it 4-1.

Arizona State tacked on three more in the fourth when Amber Freeman connected on a three-run homer to right-center to increase her team's lead to 7-1.

In the fifth, the Sun Devils made it 8-1. Aubrecht walked to lead off the inning and was pinch-run for by Allie Butterfield, who moved to second on a single by Sam Parlich, advanced to third on a bunt by Bailey Wigness and scored on a wild pitch. Arizona State added two more in the sixth. With the bases loaded on a Freeman walk, a Steele single and a Caporuscio free pass, Girard sent a deep fly ball to right to plate Kayla Ketchum, who was running for Freeman, to make it 9-1. After a walk to Aubrecht re-loaded the bases, Parlich singled to center to bring in Steele to get the Sun Devils to double figures.

The Bruins avoided a mercy-rule loss with a pair in the sixth. LaRosa led off with a walk, moved to third on a double to left-center by Carda and scored on a single up the middle from Hall to make it 10-2. Freshman Brittany Moeai then tapped a ball to second, as Hall was forced out, but Carda crossed the plate to cut the deficit to 10-3.

After the Sun Devils left the bases loaded in the seventh, the Bruins started a rally in the bottom half. With one out, Goulder singled to right and Bates walked. LaRosa followed with a chopper to third, as Steele on a do-or-die play was unable to come up with it, as the ball rolled into the 5-6 hole. However, Goulder rounded third too far and was tagged for the second out. Bates then rounded second too far as well and would be tagged out in a rundown to end the game.

The Bruins and the Sun Devils play the rubber contest of the three-game series on Sunday at 12 p.m. Gametracker and free live audio will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
