UCLA is unranked in the AP Top 25 and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll. The Bruins received 36 votes in the coaches poll (Mar. 7) to come in at No. 28 and received three votes in the AP poll (Mar. 14) to rank 40th. Michigan State didn't receive any votes in either poll.
UCLA IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
This is UCLA's 44th NCAA Tournament appearance (ranks second nationally) and the sixth for the Bruins under head coach Ben Howland. UCLA has an all-time winning percentage of .733 in the NCAA Tournament with a record of 99-36, which ranks second behind Duke's .758 (94-30). UCLA's 99 victories rank third, only to North Carolina's 102 and Kentucky's 101 wins. The Bruins are 32-11 (.744) in their first game of the NCAA Tournament. UCLA made three straight trips to the Final Four (2006-08) and leads the country in National Championships (11) and Final Four appearances (18).
SERIES VS. MICHIGAN STATE
This is the eighth meeting with Michigan State as the Bruins lead the all-time series 5-2 (.714). UCLA, ranked No. 2, won the last meeting, posting a 68-63 victory over No. 10 MSU on Nov. 20, 2007 to win the CBE Classic in Kansas City, Mo. Bruin Head Coach Ben Howland is 2-1 against the Spartans. UCLA and MSU have never met in the NCAA Tournament.
BRUINS' INJURY REPORT
Malcolm Lee has a small cartilage tear in his left knee but is not expected to miss the NCAA Tournament. He injured the knee when he was fouled at the end of regulation in the 58-54 overtime win at Washington State (Mar. 5). He played in the Pac-10 Tournament quarterfinal loss to Oregon (Mar. 10), recording six points and four rebounds in 28 minutes.
ALL UCLA LOSSES TO TEAMS IN POSTSEASON PLAY
All 10 of UCLA's losses during the 2010-11 season (22-10) were to teams involved in postseason play. Seven of the 10 losses (vs. No. 7 Villanova, vs. VCU, at No. 4 Kansas, vs. Washington, at USC, at Arizona and at Washington) were to NCAA Tournament teams. Two of the losses were to CBI teams (vs. Montana and vs. Oregon) and one was to a team in the NIT (OT loss at California).
