Los Angeles, Calif. - Behind seven great innings on the mound from junior Adam Plutko, the 10th-ranked UCLA Baseball team earned a 3-2 win over sixth-ranked Oregon State in the series opener at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday night.

Plutko picked up his third win of the season, and first in conference play, by giving up only two hits and one run (unearned) in seven innings of work. He also struck out six Oregon State hitters on the night. Matt Boyd took the loss for the Beavers to fall to 6-1 after allowing three runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. Sophomore David Berg threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to earn his sixth save of the season.

Oregon State grabbed an early lead in the top of the first, starting when Ryan Barnes reached on a throwing error by Plutko. After a bunt single by Andy Peterson moved Barnes to third, Plutko balked in Barnes to give the Beavers the 1-0 lead. Plutko would settle down though and retired the next three batters to get out of the inning.

After Plutko held the Beavers scoreless for the next three frames, the Bruins found the tying run in the bottom of the fourth. With sophomore Shane Zeile on first, junior Pat Gallagher doubled down the right field line to bring in Zeile and level the game at 1-1. In the next inning, junior Kevin Williams put the Bruins ahead with a solo shot to right off of Boyd, giving UCLA a 2-1 advantage.

UCLA would get a crucial insurance run in the bottom of the seventh, starting when Gallagher reached on an error by Oregon State second baseman Kavin Keyes. Gallagher moved up to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Brett Urabe, and two batters later junior Brian Carroll singled him home to make the game 3-1 in UCLA's favor. The Beavers would not go quietly though, and got a run across in the top of the eighth. With junior Zack Weiss now on the mound, Oregon State right fielder Dylan Davis doubled in Barnes with two outs to cut the lead to 3-2. However, Berg came in to relieve Weiss and was able to strike out Danny Hayes to end the threat. Berg then finished the job with a 1-2-3 ninth inning to seal the victory.

Gallagher led the Bruins at the plate, going 2-4 with two doubles, a run and a RBI. Zeile also went 2-4 with a run on the night while Williams and Carroll each recorded a RBI apiece.

The Bruins (19-7, 7-3 Pac-12) will continue their series with the Beavers (23-5, 5-2 Pac-12) tomorrow at 2 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
