Women's Basketball Defeats Dutch National Team, 56-48, In Rome

Rome, Italy - The UCLA women's basketball team opened play in Italy on Saturday evening with a 56-48 victory over the Dutch National Team in Rome. The Bruins stormed out to a 13-3 lead in the first quarter and never let the Dutch get closer than seven points. Senior forward Jasmine Dixon led UCLA with 16 points, 11 coming in the second half.

The Bruins started the game strong, jumping ahead 8-1 to start the contest and 20-10 after one quarter. UCLA increased its lead to as many as 15 points in the second quarter, taking a 35-20 lead on a Thea Lemberger jumper before ending the half with a 35-24 advantage. Lemberger led the Bruins in the first half with eight points, and Rhema Gardner added seven.

The Dutch trimmed UCLA's lead to seven points, 35-28, at the start of the third quarter before Rebekah Gardner scored five straight points to kick-start an 11-1 run that put UCLA up 46-29 with 32 seconds to play in the third quarter.

Free throws helped the Dutch team close to within eight with 1:27 to play in the game, but a Dixon floater with 1:03 remaining helped seal the UCLA victory.

Eight Bruin players scored in the game, led by Dixon with 16 points and Rebekah Gardner with nine. Lemberger finished with eight points, Rhema Gardner had seven, Kacy Swain totaled six points, Markel Walker added five, and Atonye Nyingifa and Mariah Williams finished with three and two points, respectively.

UCLA and the Dutch National Team will play again on Sunday evening.
