McCarthy Lifts Bruins Past Oregon, 1-0

Sept. 30, 2011

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - A late header by freshman Kylie McCarthy proved to be the difference on Friday as the second-ranked UCLA women's soccer team registered a 1-0 victory over Oregon in Pac-12 action at Drake Stadium. With the win, the Bruins extend their winning streak to six in a row, improving to 9-0-1 overall and 2-0 in the Pac-12. With the loss, the Ducks see their record fall to 5-5-1 and 0-2 in conference play.

UCLA's scoring sequence started when an Oregon foul toward the left side of the field resulted in a UCLA free kick from about 25 yards out. Sophomore Chelsea Stewart took the kick, lofting a long ball toward the far post. The ball appeared to be headed out of bounds, however Bruin defender Abby Dahlkemper managed to get a head on it, sending the ball back toward the front of the goal. McCarthy capitalized on the opportunity, leaping up to head it past Oregon goalkeeper Abby Steele from close range.

Despite the close score, the Bruins had multiple scoring opportunities throughout the match. Dahlkemper nearly got a goal of her own in the 52nd minute, however her header was cleared off the line by an Oregon defender. Junior Zakiya Bywaters also had a quality chance in the 75th minute when she found herself one-on-one with Steele in the box. Steele, however, made a great save to keep the game scoreless.

McCarthy nearly had her second goal of the match with just seconds remaining in regulation, however her 25 yard shot hit the underside of the crossbar before being snatched up by Steele. The ball appeared to cross the goal line, however the linesman was not in position to rule it a goal.

UCLA freshman goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland improved to 6-0-1 on the year, as she played the entire 90 minutes in goal. The Bruins outshot the Ducks, 17-4 on the evening.

UCLA returns to Drake Stadium on Sunday to host No. 23 Oregon State at Noon.
