LOS ANGELES - Freshmen Alexa Tielmann and Alys Williams each tallied two goals to lead the No. 4 UCLA women's water polo team past No. 7 San Diego State in a non-conference match Sunday afternoon at Spieker Aquatics Center.
UCLA (18-3) never trailed against the visiting Aztecs (11-7), securing a 4-1 lead by the end of the first half and a 5-3 cushion at halftime. In total, the Bruins received at least one goal from seven players.
Taelor Moreno led San Diego State with two goals, while Aztecs' goalkeeper Rachel Mitchell collected 13 saves.
Williams scored the game's first goal with 4:34 to play, before San Diego State answered with a goal from Moreno just 29 seconds later. UCLA closed the opening quarter on a 3-0 scoring run, netting goals from Tielmann (3:44, 2:04) and a penalty shot from Victoria Kent.
SDSU trimmed UCLA's margin to two goals (4-2) on a score from Emily Whalen with 7:24 left in the second quarter. Moreno converted on a 6-on-5 opportunity for the Aztecs, closing SDSU's gap to 4-3 with 3:07 to play before halftime.
UCLA regained its two-goal cushion on a 6-on-5 goal from Williams with 19 seconds left in the first half.
San Diego State's Alex Ford scored on a 6-on-5 opportunity with 5:45 remaining in the third quarter, cutting UCLA's lead to 5-4. The Bruins scored three consecutive goals in the third quarter to claim an 8-4 advantage.
Leading 8-5 after three quarters, UCLA added one more goal on a breakaway opportunity from Danielle Ferraro with 66 seconds left in regulation.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill finished with 10 saves in the cage for UCLA.
UCLA returns to action against Cal State Bakersfield in an MPSF contest on Sunday, March 24, at the Bruins' Spieker Aquatics Center. Game time is 1 p.m.
