LOS ANGELES - Senior midfielder McCall Zerboni notched the Bruins' first hat trick of the season on Friday, helping the top-seeded UCLA women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Fresno State in an NCAA First Round match at Drake Stadium. With the win, UCLA (19-0-2) advances to Sunday's second round against San Diego. The Toreros defeated Long Beach State, 1-0 in the other first round match Friday.

"I thought we came out focused," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. "We got one early and that kind of settled us down a bit. I'm pleased that we were able to score some goals tonight to help our confidence moving forward. (McCall) was just outstanding tonight."

Zerboni's first goal came just three minutes into the match, as she got free on the right side of the Fresno State box, eventually slipping in a near post shot from about six yards out. Whitney Sharpe and Kara Lang were credited with assists on that goal. Zerboni and Lang would hook up again for UCLA's second goal of the half in the 20th minute, as Lang hit a cross from near midfield towards the top left corner of the Fresno State goal. Zerboni trapped the ball and took a touch before unleashing a bending ball to the far post.

Zerboni got the hat trick in the 54th minute, putting away a low-rolling ball from Cheney that skimmed across the front of the Fresno State goal.

The Bruins would tack on two more goals before it was all said and done, as Cheney scored her 10th goal of the season in the 59th minute, and Lang scored on a free kick from just outside the Bulldog box in the 72nd minute.

UCLA outshot Fresno State, 26-5 on the night. Bruin goalkeeper Ashley Thompson made two saves in 80 minutes before being relieved by freshman Yiana Dimmitt.

UCLA has faced San Diego once this season, winning 3-0 at Drake Stadium back on Oct. 5. Sunday's second round begins at 1:00 p.m.
